Variable Frequency Drives & Controls

Install. Program. Commission. Service.

Variable frequency drives are the difference between an HVAC system that runs 24/7 at full speed and one that matches output to demand — cutting energy costs 30% or more and extending motor life by years.

But VFDs only deliver those results when they're sized correctly, programmed properly, integrated cleanly with the building's controls, and maintained.

AM Heating & Air handles the full lifecycle on commercial VFD and controls work: new installations, retrofits, programming and commissioning, and service on existing drives across Southern California.

What we do

New installations and retrofits. Adding VFDs to existing fans, pumps, and compressors to cut energy consumption and extend equipment life. Full retrofit of constant-speed motors to variable-speed operation — electrical, mechanical, and controls integration.

Programming and commissioning. Every VFD has hundreds of parameters. Out of the factory box, most are set to defaults that don't match your application. We configure drives for the actual load, set proper acceleration and deceleration ramps, configure protection thresholds, and commission to specification.

Service, troubleshooting, and repair. VFD faults tend to be intermittent, hard to diagnose, and expensive when missed. Our team troubleshoots fault codes, analyzes waveforms, identifies power quality issues — harmonics, voltage imbalance, ground faults — and repairs or replaces failed drives.

Controls design and sequence of operation. For larger projects we design the controls architecture and sequence of operation from scratch. For smaller jobs we work from engineered drawings.

Basic building automation integration. We integrate VFDs with building automation systems over BACnet, Modbus, and similar protocols — sufficient for monitoring drive status, setpoints, and alarms through the BAS. For complex multi-system automation and custom programming, we coordinate with a dedicated controls contractor.

VFD brands we service

We work with every major drive manufacturer — project spec drives the selection. Our team has extensive field experience with:

  • Danfoss VLT
  • ABB
  • Yaskawa
  • Schneider Electric / Square D
  • Eaton

If your specification calls for a different brand, that's fine. Most commercial VFD platforms share core concepts, and our technicians troubleshoot across manufacturers.

Motor applications we drive

  • HVAC motors — supply fans, return fans, air handler fans
  • Chiller and compressor drives
  • Cooling tower fan drives
  • Pump drives — circulating, booster, domestic water, condenser water
  • Commercial kitchen exhaust and make-up air fan drives
  • Process and industrial applications

A note on panel fabrication

We install factory-built control panels from manufacturers like Danfoss, ABB, and the drive OEMs — we don't operate an in-house panel shop. For projects requiring custom-fabricated panels, we coordinate with a qualified panel builder and handle the field install, wiring, and commissioning.

Why property owners choose AM for VFD work

We size drives for the actual load. Undersized drives fail early. Oversized drives waste money and perform poorly at partial load. Proper sizing comes from understanding the application, not picking from a catalog.

We commission properly. A VFD running with default parameters is a VFD running wrong. Commissioning is where most of the efficiency savings are locked in — or lost.

We troubleshoot across brands. Drive manufacturers want you to believe only their certified techs can service their equipment. In reality, the underlying technology is similar across major platforms. Our team diagnoses and repairs across Danfoss, ABB, Yaskawa, Schneider, Eaton, and others.
